About this class

In this presentation, Functional & Metabolic Psychiatry expert Dr. James Greenblatt will discuss the essential role of magnesium in supporting optimal brain function and how magnesium deficiency may contribute to various psychiatric presentations such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, and more. The talk will begin with an exploration of what “essential” means within the context of nutritional science and human biology, as well as the practical implications of the laws of essential nutrition in modern medicine.

Next, Dr. Greenblatt will delve into the pleiotropic roles of magnesium, with a focus on its effects on neurotransmission and cell membrane function. Research highlighting robust associations between magnesium deficiency, depression, anxiety, and sleep dysfunction will be presented, alongside studies demonstrating the significant therapeutic utility of magnesium supplementation for these and other mental illnesses.

Finally, Dr. Greenblatt will provide evidence-based recommendations for magnesium testing – with an emphasis on Trace Mineral Hair Analysis – and nutritional supplementation to support brain health, cognition, and mood.

By the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:

  • Identify two or more of the biological functions of magnesium
  • Discuss the mechanisms through which magnesium supports serotonin, melatonin, and dopamine synthesis
  • Discuss research documenting robust associations between magnesium deficiency and ailments such as depression, anxiety, and insomnia
  • Explain why blood testing is largely unreliable as a means of assessing magnesium status
  • Elucidate the strengths and limitations of Trace Mineral Hair Analysis
  • Understand how to initiate regimens of magnesium supplementation to support mental health
