Fasting is an age-old spiritual practice, but today we know it can provide significant health benefits and improve immune function. Robust and ongoing research reveals how fasting can help activate stem cells, enhance immunity by removing old or damaged immune cells and stimulating the production of new immune cells, and reduce insulin resistance, particularly for women. The benefits of fasting have now entered the mainstream of public interest, which means practitioners are being asked about how to do it safely, effectively, and with minimal disruption to daily life. Practitioners now have the opportunity to help their patients by providing guidance and countering the misinformation and myths around fasting. In particular, they can help women patients understand the role of female hormones and how to use intermittent fasting for weight loss and to help avoid weight gain starting in perimenopause. To best help their patients, it’s imperative that practitioners grasp the complex science behind safe and effective fasting and the specific benefits for healthy aging, better immunity, and better body composition. This presentation will guide participants through the scientific basics, explain the different fasting modalities, and help them integrate fasting into their nutritional protocols for Monday-morning application.
